Welcome to the Razz, where I, a firmly middle-class formerly-athletic woman probably sitting in an air conditioned office, judge the hell out of professional (and some amateur) football players (and probably other sports-related humans) for their personal and professional choices, all for your amusement! Let’s get right to it!
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you might not have heard that the Jets starting quarterback Geno Smith got rocked in the face by a teammate in a scuffle over a $600 plane ticket and will miss the next six to 10 weeks with a broken jaw.
Smith’s teammate, IK Enemkpali, a sixth-round draft pick who played in six games last year was let go from the team after the incident. He issued an apology, and it doesn’t seem like Smith will file assault charges against him.
The good: Ryan Fitzpatrick, armed with his econ degree from Harvard, will now be leading the Jets’ offense. But he might have been their starting quarterback anyway. I would say he has at least an equal chance of success as Geno (14 touchdowns and 8 interceptions for the Titans in 2013, 17 touchdowns and 8 interceptions for the Texans in 2014). Plus, Fitzpatrick worked well (3,832 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2011 for the Bills) as the starting quarterback under Jets current offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.
The bad: The Jets had a really rough off-season and no Jets fan should be surprised by this incredibly ridiculous turn of events. Plus, you can’t discount the fact that Geno Smith wasn’t actually that great of a quarterback to begin with (12 touchdowns and 21 interceptions for the Jets in 2013, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2014 and let’s not forget this.
The ugly: News broke Wednesday that Enemkpali got picked up by the Bills. This is no surprise; I mean, the Browns are considering picking up a running back who was caught on camera knocking out his girlfriend in an elevator and another linebacker is beloved by football fans everywhere even though he probably-although-not-officially killed a guy. The moral compass of the NFL offices and fans everywhere doesn’t always point north. They are both quick to forgiveness and forgetfulness. As far as talent is concerned, Enemkpali seems like a scary mofo both on and off the field.
Let’s not forget that Bills coach Rex Ryan was canned by the Jets last season, and signing the player who broke the jaw of his former team’s quarterback is the ultimate coaching troll. Rex Ryan forever.
