All I can say is I’m so glad that the series in Cleveland is over! I don’t have a lot to say this week because I really want to look at how the Royals respond tonight. If you would have asked me a week ago if I thought the Royals would get swept by the Indians, I probably would have laughed at you. But, if I’ve learned anything about baseball in my life, it’s that any team can have a bad series on any given week. It happens. The difference maker is how that team responds during the following series.

Another thing I’ve learned this week is that the Royals are like blackjack this season; playing with a hot deck for one minute and cooling down the next. There are several factors that tie in to their deck right now. Last week, they were playing with fire and excitement. Rookies were stepping up to the challenge, pitching was so-so, and bats were hot. Then, the ugly head of inconsistent starting pitching reared itself once again against the Indians and hot bats turned from lukewarm to cold, in some cases. The Royals put up a total of 6 runs during the 4-game stretch in Cleveland. Here’s where it gets worse: they allowed 25 runs. The series before the Indians, the Royals put up 22 runs and allowed 10.

The Royals need to find some consistency in order to really get rolling. They have the ability to take over the top of the division and stay there. I don’t usually like to say any series is more important than another, but I think the next three series are pretty big, especially from a momentum standpoint.

Coming up this week: Tonight, the Royals take on the Orioles in game 1 of a 3 game series. It will be Danny Duffy (1-0, 3.44 ERA) facing Mike Wright (2-3, 5.88 ERA). Following this series, the Royals travel to Chicago to face the White Sox for 3 and then it’s back home to Kansas City for a rematch with the Indians.
