What is love (baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more)? I will leave it to The Roxbury Guys to explain the emotion of love, I am here to tell you about tennis love. And no, not that godawful tennis romantic comedy, Wimbledon.
In tennis love means zero. Why? I don’t know, why does the scoring go in random increments in the first place? Tennis should have been an American made sport-it suits our elitism well.
There are two running theories on where the term “love” comes from. Some say we did a piss-poor job of passing down the French word “l’ouef” which means “egg”. This makes sense as even in modern sports we call zeroes on the board “goose eggs”.
The second theory is far more romantic. From the Oxford English Dictionary, it is said that love just means love, as in the emotion. They say zero is love because if you have no points the only thing keeping your sorry ass on the court instead of hiding under your little white towel is your love for the game. Adorable. I guess.
I’m now campaigning for Cher to be the new hype song for tennis players that can’t score. Do you believe in life after love?
