It doesn’t surprise many people that the Wildcats are struggling during Big 12 play. The conference is very difficult because everyone is good. The Wildcats currently sit in 8th place in the Big 12 Conference with a record of 1-4 in Big 12 play. Their one conference win came against Texas Tech on January 12th.

On Saturday, the Wildcats were looking to secure another win at home against Iowa State, who hasn’t had a very impressive season themselves. Despite one of Iowa States players, Hallice Cooke, being suspended for violation of team rules, the Cyclones still managed to dominate the whole game. The Wildcats went on a 71/2 minute shooting drought early on in the game and the Cyclones took a 17 point lead. The Wildcats tried their hardest to come back and cut the lead to five at one point, but the Cyclones had an answer to every run the Cats went on. The Wildcats have been struggling with the zone for a long time and this game showed that nothing has changed. The Cyclones had been having some major struggles defensively the past seven games, but Iowa’s defense looked really impressive against the Cats on Saturday.

The Wildcats will play at Baylor tonight. The Bears are fourth in the Big 12 and have a 4-1 record in Big 12 play. They have won four straight games against Oklahoma State, Iowa State, TCU and Texas Tech after a big loss to Kansas during their first game in conference play. Senior Lester Medford has been a really important factor to the Bears this season. He moved from shooting guard to point guard and is clearly not the Bears weakest link like people said he was going to be. The Wildcats face a very difficult game against a very hot team.

On Saturday, January 23rd, the Wildcats play Oklahoma State in Manhattan. Oklahoma State is ninth in the Big 12 and has a 1-4 record in the Big 12 conference. The Cowboys win was against TCU and their losses were against Baylor, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Texas.  The Cowboys have some good players that could give the Wildcats a headache. The freshman point guard, Jawun Evans, has earned two Big 12 Newcomer of the Week awards already this season and only five players in the nation and just two freshman have scored more points than him this season. This is a game the Wildcats should be able to win.

The following week the Wildcats will face another very tough team in West Virginia on Tuesday January 26th, then a random SEC vs. Big 12 match up with Ole Miss on Saturday January 30th. The sad thing is that out of all of these games I could see the Cats only winning one, maybe two of them. That’s just how conference play has gone for the Wildcats this season. The Big 12 Conference is tough and it won’t be getting any easier anytime soon.
